Low Energy and Fatigue

Low energy is also known as fatigue condition. It’s a very common complaint that is faced by many people. Waking up in the morning with a lethargic feeling can be due to physical and psychological depression. It can happen due to absence of pleasure or the ability to experience it. Low energy gives the warning that something wrong is going on in our live either physically or emotionally.

Fatigue complaint is commonly done by elderly people and people suffering with chronic diseases. Symptoms of fatigue can vary from mild to serious disease. The feeling of fatigue can last temporarily and disappear quickly, due to different reasons like exertion, insomnia. Fatigue can be chronic and can last for a longer period of time. Chronic fatigue can be depression or heart failure.

Symptoms of fatigue

Fatigue symptoms can be serious or life-threatening depending on various disease or sickness. Symptoms occurring due to fatigue are:

  • Unbalanced spinal
  • Allergies like asthma
  • Anemia
  • Chronic pain
  • Dehydration
  • Depression
  • Fever
  • Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid gland) or hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid gland)
  • Jet lag
  • Perimenopause (the period of time close to menopause) and menopause
  • Pregnancy
  • Insomnia

Diseases or disorders that can cause fatigue are:

  • Addison’s disease (deceased production of hormones by the adrenal glands)
  • Cancer
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD, includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis)
  • Congestive heart failure
  • Diabetes
  • Fibromyalgia (syndrome associated with long-term, body-wide pain points)
  • Infectious diseases, such as HIV/AIDS, influenza and infectious mononucleosis
  • Liver or kidney disease
  • Myasthenia gravis (autoimmune neuromuscular disorder that causes muscle weakness)
  • Rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus or other connective tissue disorders

Fatigue can also be the result of medications:

  • Antidepressants
  • Antihistamines
  • High blood pressure medications or diuretics
  • Sleeping medications, tranquilizers, sedatives, and anti-anxiety medications
  • Steroids
